i drove all night

I got out of bed to draw this late last night. I couldn't sleep. I drove for six hours yesterday. Do you find it hard to sleep after a long distance drive? When you close your eyes are you still behind the wheel? Weaving in and out of all that traffic? Putting your foot down on the accelerator and not taking it off? Not caring what's in your way? Feeling like you could just drive off the end of the earth? No? Oh. Right. Ok then. Oh.

Yes, I know the feeling Andrea. When we drive the nearly 2000 between Arizona and Wisconsin I get that way.

Lovely box of badges. Did you do it while driving :)?

Hope all is well with you and your family.

IT's terribly difficult to wind down after a long stretch of combined concentration and boredom. That's what driving is for me. I hope you had some good music to play.

LOL When I think of driving, I keep driving in circles around this dang island! Your box of buttons are so cool ... really nice composition too!

i completely hear you! I feel like I have to run or something to get all of that energy out before i get near my bed. If not I'm up all night.

Lovely drawing!!

I find that when I first get out of the car and walk--into the house, per se--I'm exhausted. I feel like I want to drop everything and just go to bed. But once I sit down, I'm wide awake again. Long drives are so exhausting!

Unfortunately, if I'm driving for six hours, that's when I want to sleep, which is never good. Excellent drawing.

Uhhhh...I think I have the opposite problem. I find it terribly difficult to stay awake...BEHIND THE WHEEL...eeek!!!!

Love this drawing and am happy you are back!

I can't figure out the blogger comment problem...hmmm.

Six hours? I'd definitely feel like a Thelma (where's Louise?!) by then. Hope this great drawing got you to sleep eventually though I rather think it must have kept you awake all night, it's lovely and so detailed as always.

you should try driving six hours with two toddlers and no other adult. the talking ... at least with my two ... never stops and by the time i'm home, getting to sleep is no problem.

i do, however, have that problem if i don't draw during the day. this is your usual stunning work!

Another beautiful drawing. And to think you did it after driving for six hours and then getting out of bed in the middle of the night. Amazing!

I know the feeling, but I used to get it after sailing in the evening! I'd wake up late at night trying to sail my bed...

I love the continuity between some of your pieces, with badges we've seen before. Hope you're sleeping better again!

Cheers folks.
I do LOVE driving, even long distance. It's just the trying to get to sleep I can't stand.

Teri, that must be some drive - a lot longer than 6 hours, I'm guessing?

Sherry, yep, good music is essential. For me, driving is the perfect opportunity to sing aloud - with nobody in earshot! I love that.

Becka, he he, 'sailing the bed'!

Thank you all, I'm really pleased with this drawing. It's one of my recent personal faves.I always like the ones that you have not thought about too much. The drawings you have no expectations of.

I often shy away from tricky perspective, but I tried to show some depth in the box and I am happy with the result.

Thanks guys.

Perfect as usual, Andrea!

I like to sing my head off in the car, too.

I wanted to ask: how do you achieve the very subtle and delicate shading in the box, the one that doesn't look cross-hatched. Do you use a sepia pencil?

Thanks,
Claudia

Badges, badges ... I used to collect badges (still have about, erm, 200, over at my parents). Maybe drawing them would be cathartic and then I could let them go ...

Hope your sleep patterns have returned! I don't drive so I can't sympathise ...

I know the feeling too! And i know a Roy Orbison version of this song...
Another great illustration, Andrea.

Cheers girls.

Claudia, well spotted. I do use a little colour pencil for those areas, yes.

Sherry, thank you so much.

Mithi, I love badges. Like cassettes they just take you right back, to the day. I too have loads in my parents attic. I seem to be starting yet another collection. Hmmm...

France, I adore that song.

I know both Lauper and Orbison's versions of the song, and like them ... but I can't exactly relate to the feeling, since I do not drive.

Lovely drawing, as usual!
